Bounds for calculated measurements
Use stated measurement intervals and how each positive input affects the result. Rounded inputs do not become exact after arithmetic
- Product Multiply lower endpoints for a lower product and upper endpoints for an upper product
- Quotient Pair the lower numerator with the upper denominator for the lower boundary; reverse the pairing for the upper boundary
- Conservative rounding Round lower boundaries down and upper boundaries up. Explain when the reported interval is wider than the tight interval
- Decision A minimum requirement is guaranteed only when every possible value satisfies it. A threshold inside the interval needs better information or a changed design
- Assumptions Rounding bounds alone do not include calibration bias, irregular shapes or inconsistent methods
Worked example
A square side is 10 cm to the nearest 1 cm with halfway values rounded up. Find its area interval and assess a minimum area of 105 cm²
- \(\displaystyle 9.5^2=90.25\)Area is smallest at the included lower side endpoint
- \(\displaystyle 10.5^2=110.25\)The upper side endpoint is excluded, so its square is a strict upper bound
- \(\displaystyle 90.25\le A<110.25\)Area is in cm². The threshold 105 cm² lies inside the interval, so the nominal reading cannot settle the requirement

Questions about this topic
Why are both tight speed boundaries excluded?+
The lower ratio requires the excluded upper time and the upper ratio requires the excluded upper distance. This follows from the stated positive, halfway-up intervals; other endpoint conventions must be checked separately
Can I round normally?+
Not when the rounded number must remain a guaranteed bound. Rounding down for a lower boundary and up for an upper boundary preserves a containing interval
Does a more precise display remove bias?+
No. Correct or account for known calibration error and assess the measuring method before relying on a rounding-only interval
Does a numerical answer establish a complete modelling report?+
No. A report also needs assumptions, reasoning, a contextual decision and evaluation. The open written task requires separate human feedback
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 10 Mathematics, chapter 1: Measurement
