Joined-cuboid surface area
Count only the faces exposed after joining
- Separate first For each complete cuboid, use: \(\displaystyle 2(lw+lh+wh)\)
- Internal faces Each joined interface hides two matching patches
- Additional exclusions Remove an outside face only when the task explicitly excludes it
Worked example
A lower cuboid is 8 cm by 6 cm by 2 cm high. An upper cuboid is 4 cm by 3 cm by 3 cm high. Its whole base touches the lower top. Find the coated area when the lower underside is excluded
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}S_1=2(48+16+12)\\S_1=152\end{gathered}\)Complete surface area of the lower cuboid, in cm²
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}S_2=2(12+12+9)\\S_2=66\end{gathered}\)Complete surface area of the upper cuboid, in cm²
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}S=152+66-2(12)\\S=194\end{gathered}\)Remove both copies of the contact area
- \(\displaystyle A=194-48=146\text{ cm}^2\)Exclude the 8 cm by 6 cm lower underside once

Questions about this topic
Why is contact area subtracted twice?+
The separate surface-area totals count one face on each object. Both become internal when the objects touch
Does touching the ground automatically remove the underside?+
Follow the task: coating every face includes it, while a stated underside exclusion removes it. Do not infer an exclusion just from a drawing
Can I add the volumes instead?+
Volumes add when the solids do not overlap, but that answers a different question. Coating requires exposed surface area
What if the upper base covers only part of the lower top?+
That is the usual case here. Remove the contact patch twice, leaving the uncovered lower top in the area
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
