Cuboid surface area
List included faces and add rectangular areas
- Closed cuboid Include all six faces
- Open top Subtract the length times width area from the closed surface area
- Joined solids Subtract twice the contact area from the sum of the separate surface areas
Worked example
Find the outside area of an open-top cuboid with length 10 cm, width 6 cm and height 4 cm
- \(\displaystyle A_{\text{base}}=10\times6=60\)The top is absent, so there is only one horizontal face
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}A_{\text{sides}}=2(10\times4)\\{}+2(6\times4)=128\end{gathered}\)Include both pairs of side faces
- \(\displaystyle SA=60+128=188\text{ cm}^2\)Add the five included face areas
