Questions about this topic
Can I list factors or multiples instead?+
Yes. Use complete factor lists for HCF, or positive multiples up to the first shared value for LCM. Prime factorisation can make the comparison shorter for larger numbers
Why use the smaller counts for HCF?+
A common factor must divide both numbers. Any extra copy beyond the smaller count would stop it dividing one of them
Why use the larger counts for LCM?+
A common multiple must contain enough copies for both numbers. Taking fewer would fail for one number; taking more is unnecessary
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 7 Mathematics, chapter 1: Number structure
