Digits, places and powers
The place determines the weight of each digit
- Place weights From ones to thousands, each step left multiplies the weight by ten \(\displaystyle \begin{aligned}10^{0}&=1\\10^{1}&=10\\10^{2}&=100\\10^{3}&=1\,000\end{aligned}\)
- Construct Use one term per non-zero digit. Keep its original position and write a power of ten even for ones \(\displaystyle 502=5\times10^{2}+2\times10^{0}\)
- Read Multiply each digit by its weight and add. Terms need not be in place order \(\displaystyle 2\times10^{0}+5\times10^{2}=502\)
- Omitted term Subtract the shown contributions from the complete value. A single missing term is only part of the full expansion
Worked example
Write this number in expanded notation using powers of ten
- \(\displaystyle 7\times10^{4}=70\,000\)Seven is in the ten-thousands place
- \(\displaystyle 2\times10^{2}=200\)Two is in the hundreds place. The zero thousands digit does not move it
- \(\displaystyle 6\times10^{0}=6\)Six is in the ones place. Use the weight one, written as ten to the power zero
- \(\displaystyle \begin{aligned}70\,206&=7\times10^{4}\\&{}+2\times10^{2}\\&{}+6\times10^{0}\end{aligned}\)Add the three contributions. Omit zero terms without changing the other positions

Questions about this topic
Can I put the terms in a different order?+
Yes. Each power still names the same place, so changing the order of the sum does not change its value
Why leave out zero terms?+
They add zero. We omit them in these tasks, but keep the other digits in their original places
Is a digit times one numerically wrong for the ones place?+
No. It has the same value. These construction tasks specifically ask for a power of ten in every term, so write the ones weight as ten to the power zero
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 7 Mathematics, chapter 1: Number structure
