Complete equivalent ratios
Corresponding terms use one common factor, called k. The letter x represents the missing term
- Match positions First matches first, second matches second and third matches third
- Choose a direction Divide the target known term by its matching source term
- Apply Multiply the corresponding source term by that factor to find the missing term
- Check Fill in the missing term. Every corresponding pair should now give the same factor
Worked example
Find the missing term
- \(\displaystyle k=6\div15=\frac{2}{5}\)Find the factor from the left ratio to the right ratio
- \(\displaystyle x=22\times\frac{2}{5}\)Apply that factor to the corresponding second term
- \(\displaystyle x=8.8\)The missing term need not be a whole number
- \(\displaystyle 15:22=6:8.8\)Both terms use the same factor

Questions about this topic
Can the factor be a fraction?+
Yes. Multiplying every term by the same positive fraction preserves the ratio
Do I have to use the ratio on the left first?+
No. Start with the complete ratio and keep the direction consistent
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 1: Percentages and ratios
