Recover amounts from one share
Find one equal part from the known share, then scale to another share or the total
- Match The known amount is one share, not the total. Match it to its ratio term
- Divide Divide the known amount by its own term to find one equal part
- Multiply Multiply one part by the requested term. For the total, use the sum of all terms
Worked example
A mixture uses ingredients in the ratio 2:3:5. The 2-part ingredient has mass 18 g. Find the mass of the 5-part ingredient and the total mass
- \(\displaystyle 18\text{ g}\div2=9\text{ g}\)Divide the known 2-part amount by 2 to find the value of one part
- \(\displaystyle 5\times9\text{ g}=45\text{ g}\)Multiply the value of one part by 5 to find the requested ingredient
- \(\displaystyle \left(2+3+5\right)\times9\text{ g}=90\text{ g}\)Multiply the total number of ratio parts by 9 g to find the total mass

Questions about this topic
Why do I divide by the known ratio term?+
The known amount represents that many equal parts. Dividing by its term gives the amount of one part, which can then be scaled
How do I find the total from one known part?+
Find the value of one part, add all ratio terms, and multiply the sum by the value of one part
What does a scale of 1:n mean?+
One unit on the drawing represents n units in reality. Multiply the drawn length by n, using one common unit before converting the result
How do I find the drawing length from an actual length?+
Convert the actual length to the drawing unit, then divide by the scale denominator. At 1:200, convert 6 m to 600 cm, then divide by 200 to get a drawn length of 3 cm
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 1: Percentages and ratios
