Describing a categorical distribution
A categorical report explains which categories occur and which is most common. It states the sample size, names the mode and gives a count or percentage that supports the conclusion
- State the sample size Say how many people or items were included in the distribution \(\displaystyle n=24+10+12+4=50\)
- Name the modal category The mode is the category with the highest frequency \(\displaystyle 24>12,10,4\quad\Rightarrow\quad\text{mode}=\text{Card}\)
- Quote a supporting figure Give the count or percentage that supports the statement about the mode \(\displaystyle \text{percentage}=\frac{\text{category count}}{n}\times100\)
- Respect category order Keep ordinal categories in their natural order and do not recite every category when a shorter report is enough \(\displaystyle \text{Very unsatisfied}<\text{Unsatisfied}<\text{Satisfied}<\text{Very satisfied}\)
Worked example
A survey of 50 customers records their most common payment method. Write the main facts needed for a description
- \(\displaystyle n=24+10+12+4=50\)The four category counts add to a sample size of 50 customers
- \(\displaystyle 24>12,10,4\quad\Rightarrow\quad\text{mode}=\text{Card}\)Card has the greatest count, so Card is the modal category
- \(\displaystyle \frac{24}{50}\times100=48\%\)The modal category represents 48% of the sample
- \(\displaystyle \text{Card was the most common payment method, chosen by }48\%\text{ of the 50 customers.}\)This sentence names the category and gives the sample size and supporting percentage

Questions about this topic
What is the mode of a categorical distribution?+
It is the category with the greatest frequency, or the category chosen most often
Why must the sample size be stated?+
The sample size gives the total number of observations and provides the denominator for percentage frequencies
What is the difference between nominal and ordinal categories?+
Nominal categories are names without a natural order, whereas ordinal categories have a meaningful order such as low to high
What evidence should I keep from an independent production task?+
Keep your table or chart, written conclusion, the tool and function chosen, settings or formula, output and a separate check. The model supports self-review; completing it does not certify independent mastery or verify that you used a tool
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, General Mathematics, chapter 1: Data distributions
