Percentage segmented bar charts
A percentage segmented bar divides one complete bar into category segments. Calculate the percentage width of each segment, add the widths in order to find endpoints, and check that the bar finishes at 100%
- Find each percentage Divide each category frequency by the sample size and multiply by 100. \(\displaystyle p_i=\frac{f_i}{n}\times100\%\)
- Keep the category order Place the segments in the stated order because the order is part of the display \(\displaystyle A\;\rightarrow\;B\;\rightarrow\;C\)
- Accumulate the endpoints Add each segment percentage to the endpoint already reached \(\displaystyle C_i=C_{i-1}+p_i,\quad C_0=0\%\)
- Check the complete bar The last cumulative endpoint must be 100% so every record is represented \(\displaystyle C_k=100\%\)
Worked example
A survey records 12 responses in category A, 18 in category B and 10 in category C. Find the percentage widths and cumulative endpoints for a segmented bar chart in the order A, B, C.
- \(\displaystyle n=12+18+10=40\)The sample size is the total of the three category frequencies
- \(\displaystyle p_A=\frac{12}{40}\times100=30\%,\quad p_B=\frac{18}{40}\times100=45\%,\quad p_C=\frac{10}{40}\times100=25\%\)Convert each frequency to a percentage using the total of 40.
- \(\displaystyle C_A=30\%,\quad C_B=30\%+45\%=75\%,\quad C_C=75\%+25\%=100\%\)Add the segment percentages in the stated order to find each endpoint
- \(\displaystyle C_C=100\%\quad\Rightarrow\quad\text{the bar is complete}\)The final endpoint is 100%, so all responses are represented

Questions about this topic
What is the difference between a segment percentage and an endpoint?+
A segment percentage gives the width of one category, while an endpoint gives the total percentage reached after that category and all earlier categories
Why must the final endpoint be 100%?+
The complete bar represents the whole sample, so the cumulative percentages must finish at 100%
How should rounded percentages be used?+
Round displayed percentages as instructed, but keep the category order and use the exact frequencies to ensure that the complete bar reaches 100%
What evidence should I keep from an independent production task?+
Keep your table or chart, written conclusion, the tool and function chosen, settings or formula, output and a separate check. The model supports self-review; completing it does not certify independent mastery or verify that you used a tool
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, General Mathematics, chapter 1: Data distributions
