Range, quartiles and IQR
Quartiles and IQR support comparison of continuous numerical distributions. Use the same convention and units, and interpret the middle-half spread alongside full span and shape
- Order and retain repeats Each occurrence is an observation. Sorting changes order, not the data
- State the convention Use medians of halves. Omit the single middle observation when n is odd; omit none when n is even
- Compare in context Range describes the full span; IQR describes the middle portion. Name the measure, use the same units and consider unusual observations
Worked example
Eight times in minutes are 18, 9, 22, 12, 16, 7, 20 and 14. Find Q1, Q3, range and IQR
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}7,\ 9,\ 12,\ 14\\16,\ 18,\ 20,\ 22\end{gathered}\)Order the data and split into lower and upper halves of four
- \(\displaystyle Q_1=\frac{9+12}{2}=10.5\)Median of the lower half
- \(\displaystyle Q_3=\frac{18+20}{2}=19\)Median of the upper half
- \(\displaystyle \text{IQR}=19-10.5=8.5\)The IQR is 8.5 minutes
- \(\displaystyle \text{range}=22-7=15\)The range is 15 minutes

Questions about this topic
Why state a quartile convention?+
Different textbooks and software use different definitions for small data sets. Here we use the stated median-of-halves convention
Do I remove every copy of the median?+
No. For odd n, omit only the single middle observation from the halves. Keep all other observations, including equal values
Can a quartile be absent from the data?+
Yes. Averaging two middle observations can produce a value not observed
Can range or IQR be negative?+
No. Ordered extremes and quartiles ensure both differences are non-negative. Zero is possible
Does a larger IQR imply a larger range?+
No. One group may have a wider middle half and a narrower overall span
Does IQR always ignore outliers?+
No. It is less sensitive to extremes, but changing or adding observations can change quartile positions or values
Does a boxplot show exactly one quarter of values in every segment?+
Quartiles divide ordered data approximately into quarters. Small samples, ties and conventions mean exact percentage claims require care
Can I calculate quartiles from rounded measurements?+
Yes, for the recorded data. Keep decimal precision through the calculation and report the measurement units. The recorded values are not necessarily the exact underlying measurements
Does an unchanged range mean an unchanged distribution?+
No. The extremes can stay fixed while the inner observations, quartiles and shape change
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, General Mathematics, chapter 1: Data distributions
