Exponential growth and decay graphs
Repeated multiplication connects an exponential table, rule and curve. Use positive initial values and positive non-unit multipliers for the growth and decay families here
- Parameters and direction The initial value a is positive. A multiplier greater than one gives growth, while a multiplier between zero and one gives decay. A multiplier of one gives a constant
- Intercept and asymptote The y-axis intercept is (0,a). There is no x-axis intercept. For growth or decay (b≠1), the horizontal asymptote is y=0.
- Negative inputs A negative exponent takes a reciprocal. It does not make a positive-base output negative
- Table to rule Use y(0) for a and the ratio y(1)/y(0) for b. Check the next output by multiplying again
- Exact equations Divide by a if needed. Express the target as a power of the same base, then equate exponents
- Numerical equations Plot the curve and horizontal target, or use trial inputs. Bracket the crossing and refine before rounding. No logarithm method is required here
- Model domain An unrestricted growth or decay curve accepts every real x and has range y>0. A count of stages or objects may require non-negative whole inputs. Check the model assumptions
Worked example
Solve the decay equation exactly
- \(\displaystyle \left(\frac12\right)^x=\frac18\)Divide both sides by 6.
- \(\displaystyle \frac18=\left(\frac12\right)^3\)Write the target using the same base
- \(\displaystyle x=3\)Check: six times one eighth is three quarters

Questions about this topic
Does an exponential rule always grow?+
No. A positive multiplier below 1 gives decay; a multiplier above 1 gives growth
Why exclude b=1?+
It gives y=a, a constant rather than growth or decay
Can an input be negative?+
Yes for the unrestricted rule. Its output remains positive. A practical model may restrict the inputs
Do I need logarithms?+
No. These exact equations use matching powers. Other intersections can be found graphically or by numerical trials
When may I round?+
Keep the exact fractions in the exact tasks. Only the numerical intersection tasks request a one-decimal-place approximation
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 10 Mathematics, chapter 10: Quadratic and non-linear graphs
