Interpret the whole model
A quadratic rule, its domain and its units belong together. The algebraic turning point may be outside the interval where the model applies
- Read the turn Set the squared expression to zero. The remaining constant is the output at the turning point
- Classify Positive a gives a minimum; negative a gives a maximum
- Restrict If the turning point is outside the domain, compare the endpoints for the requested optimum
- Find a level Set the rule equal to the specified output, solve both branches, then apply the domain
- Evaluate Substitute results, compare predictions with observations and communicate uncertainty and limitations
Worked example
A model y=−(t−4)²+20 applies on 0≤t≤3. Find its greatest allowed output and when y=16.
- \(\displaystyle (4,20)\)The algebraic turning point occurs at t=4.
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}y(0)=4\\y(3)=19\end{gathered}\)The vertex is outside the interval. Compare endpoints: greatest allowed output is 19 at t=3.
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}-(t-4)^2+20=16\\(t-4)^2=4\\t=2\text{ or }6\end{gathered}\)Solve both algebraic branches for the specified level
- \(\displaystyle t=2\)Only 2 lies in 0≤t≤3. Substitution gives y(2)=16.

Questions about this topic
Do I need the turning-point formula here?+
No. These introductory rules are already in turning-point form. Make the square zero and read the remaining constant
Why compare endpoints?+
A quadratic is monotonic on an interval entirely to one side of its turning point. Its relevant extreme then occurs at an endpoint
Can there be no threshold crossing?+
Yes. A requested output can lie above a maximum, below a minimum, or be reached only outside the allowed interval
Do negative inputs always fail?+
No. Signed positions or settings may be allowed. Use the actual domain and units
What does a prediction error mean?+
It measures disagreement with an observation. Decide whether that matters using measurement precision, assumptions and intended use
Can I extrapolate beyond the stated domain?+
Only with a justified reason and further checks. A fitted rule does not guarantee behaviour outside the observations
What makes a useful model report?+
State the rule, variable meanings, units, domain, method, contextual result, checks and limitations, with a labelled graph or table when useful
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 9 Mathematics, chapter 10: Quadratic equations and graphs
