Minimum-balance monthly interest
Use this rule only when the account explicitly specifies it. A complete balance history or stated monthly minimum is required
- Read the account rule This fictional account uses the minimum balance over the whole month. Other accounts may use different rules. The complete balance-change history includes the opening balance; balances are unchanged between entries
- Use the stated monthly rate B is the minimum monthly balance in dollars; r is the monthly percentage number. Use the monthly percentage number as shown in the formula below, and do not divide a monthly rate by twelve \(\displaystyle I=B(r/100)\)
- Include all fees F is the sum of listed fees, I is interest and N the signed net change, all in dollars. Interest and fees are applied after the displayed balances \(\displaystyle N=I-F\)
- Interpret the result Positive N means a net credit; negative N means a net debit; zero means no net change. This change is not the closing balance itself
Worked example
A fictional account’s complete balance-change history is $1,360, $1,285 and $1,330, unchanged between entries. It pays 0.8% monthly on the minimum and charges $9.20 in fees. Both adjustments occur after the displayed closing balance. Find the net change and adjusted closing balance
- \(\displaystyle B=\min(1360,1285,1330)\)Read every entry of the complete history
- \(\displaystyle B=\$1{,}285\)The middle balance is the minimum in this example
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}I=1285(0.8/100)\\I=\$10.28\end{gathered}\)The rate is monthly, so use it directly
- \(\displaystyle N=10.28-9.20=\$1.08\)Positive net change means a credit
- \(\displaystyle 1330+1.08=\$1{,}331.08\)Apply that change to the pre-adjustment closing balance

Questions about this topic
Do all accounts use minimum monthly balance?+
No. This is the explicit rule of these fictional examples. Real accounts may use other balances, rates, conditions and timing
Why not divide the rate by twelve?+
The given rate is already monthly. Dividing again would apply the wrong rate
Can the net change be zero?+
Yes. When interest equals total fees, they cancel and there is neither a net credit nor a net debit
Is net change the amount left in the account?+
No. Add the signed net change to the balance immediately before the interest and fee adjustments to obtain the adjusted balance
Are a few observations enough to find the minimum?+
Only if they are the complete balance-change history, with the opening balance included and no changes between entries. Otherwise the monthly minimum might have been lower
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 10 Mathematics, chapter 2: Consumer arithmetic
