Compound growth across equal periods
The model keeps a fixed nominal annual rate, with no extra deposits, withdrawals, repayments or fees. Interest remains in the account. A nominal annual rate is allocated equally across the stated compounding periods; it is not an effective annual growth rate
- Define the symbols P is the principal and A the final amount, both in dollars. R is the nominal annual percentage number, k the periods per year, t the years, r the percentage number per period and n the total period count
- Convert both quantities Annual means k=1, half-yearly k=2, quarterly k=4 and monthly k=12. Divide the nominal annual percentage number by k and multiply the years by k. \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}r=R/k\\n=kt\end{gathered}\)
- Keep the original whole Use the percentage number r without a percent sign inside r/100. The multiplier keeps the balance and adds the period interest \(\displaystyle q=1+r/100\)
- Apply each update Use the unrounded balance from the previous period. The exponent counts all the updates. Keep calculator precision and round only the requested answer \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}B_0=P\\B_{j+1}=qB_j\\A=Pq^n\\I=A-P\end{gathered}\)
Worked example
A fictional $1,800 deposit earns a fixed nominal 4.8% p.a., compounded quarterly for two years. No payments or fees occur. Find the final balance and total interest to cents. Keep full precision until the requested final rounding
- \(\displaystyle r=4.8/4=1.2\)The quarterly percentage number is 1.2, meaning 1.2% per quarter
- \(\displaystyle n=2(4)=8\)The term contains eight quarters
- \(\displaystyle q=1+1.2/100=1.012\)Include the original whole in each update
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}A=1800(1.012)^8\\\approx\$1{,}980.23\end{gathered}\)Raise the multiplier, not the principal, to eight periods
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}I=1800(1.012)^8-1800\\\approx\$180.23\end{gathered}\)Subtract the principal from the unrounded amount, then round the total interest

Questions about this topic
What is nominal annual interest?+
Here it is a quoted annual percentage allocated equally across the stated compounding periods. Dividing it by the number of periods gives the period percentage rate. Effective annual growth includes the effect of compounding and is different
Does per annum mean interest is added annually?+
No. Per annum describes the quoted time basis. The question separately states annual, half-yearly, quarterly or monthly compounding
Should I round after every update?+
These practice models retain full precision between periods and round each requested answer to cents. Displayed table amounts are rounded summaries. If a different model specifies per-period rounding, follow that rule instead
Why does a table show only the first few periods?+
Those rows practise the repeated-update process. The final-amount question still uses every period in the full stated term; count them independently
Does more frequent compounding always mean a better account?+
With the same positive nominal annual rate and no other transactions or fees, it gives a higher balance over the same complete years. Comparing different products also requires their rates, fees and conditions. A borrower generally prefers a lower amount owed
Can I apply this formula unchanged when payments occur?+
No. A deposit, withdrawal, repayment or fee changes the balance at a particular time. Update that balance before calculating later interest. State the timing and the modified model
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
