Expanding a bracket
Multiply every bracket term by the whole outside factor. Keep signs attached to factors. Collect only terms with matching pronumeral parts and powers
- Integer factor Include the sign of the outside factor in every product \(\displaystyle \begin{aligned}&-5(2t-7)\\&=(-5)(2t)+(-5)(-7)\\&=-10t+35\end{aligned}\)
- Monomial factor Multiply coefficients and pronumeral parts in each product \(\displaystyle \begin{aligned}&4h(3h-5)\\&=(4h)(3h)+(4h)(-5)\\&=12h^2-20h\end{aligned}\)
- Powers and two pronumerals Use the same multiplication rule for higher powers and different pronumerals. Add the exponents when multiplying powers of the same pronumeral \(\displaystyle \begin{aligned}&-2a^2(3a+4b)\\&=(-2a^2)(3a)+(-2a^2)(4b)\\&=-6a^3-8a^2b\end{aligned}\)
- Leading term Keep terms outside the bracket while expanding, then collect like terms \(\displaystyle \begin{aligned}&8-3(2s-5)\\&=8+(-3)(2s)+(-3)(-5)\\&=8-6s+15\\&=-6s+23\end{aligned}\)
Worked example
Expand and collect like terms
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}=(-3)(4z)+(-3)(-5)\\+6(2z+3)\end{gathered}\)Multiply every term in the first bracket. Keep the second bracket unchanged
- \(\displaystyle =-12z+15+6(2z+3)\)Simplify the first two products
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}=-12z+15\\+6(2z)+6(3)\end{gathered}\)Multiply every term in the second bracket
- \(\displaystyle =-12z+15+12z+18\)Simplify the second pair of products
- \(\displaystyle =(-12+12)z+(15+18)\)Group the coefficients of matching pronumeral terms and group the constants
- \(\displaystyle =33\)The pronumeral terms cancel. The constants remain

Questions about this topic
What does the outside factor multiply?+
It multiplies every term inside the bracket. Terms outside that bracket remain separate
How do I use a negative outside factor?+
Keep the negative sign with the factor in every product. A product of two negative factors is positive
Which terms can I collect?+
Collect terms with the same pronumeral part and powers. Add their signed coefficients. Collect the constants separately
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 9 Mathematics, chapter 2: Linear equations
