Classifying variable pairs and displays
Classify each variable from what its values represent. Then identify the explanatory and response variables and select a display that matches the pair type
- Classify by meaning A categorical variable names or groups cases, while a numerical variable counts or measures \(\displaystyle \text{route label}\to\text{categorical},\quad\text{distance}\to\text{numerical}\)
- Treat codes as labels Digits used only to identify a group are categorical values, not numerical measurements \(\displaystyle \text{zone code }4\to\text{categorical}\)
- Match the pair to a display Two categorical variables use a percentage segmented bar chart, a mixed pair uses grouped numerical displays, and two numerical variables use a scatterplot \(\displaystyle \text{cat-cat}\to\text{percentage segmented bar chart},\quad\text{num-cat}\to\text{parallel boxplots},\quad\text{num-num}\to\text{scatterplot}\)
- Assign the roles The explanatory variable is used to account for variation in the response variable, regardless of table order \(\displaystyle \text{EV}\to\text{RV}\)
Worked example
A school survey records each student's house group and number of late arrivals to examine whether house group is associated with late arrivals. Classify the variables, identify the roles and select a suitable display
- \(\displaystyle \text{house group}\to\text{categorical}\)House group names categories
- \(\displaystyle \text{late arrivals}\to\text{numerical (discrete)}\)A count is numerical and discrete
- \(\displaystyle \text{house group}\to\text{EV},\quad\text{late arrivals}\to\text{RV}\)The question uses house group to help explain variation in the count
- \(\displaystyle \text{num-cat}\to\text{parallel boxplots or back-to-back stem plot}\)A numerical response can be compared across categorical groups with either grouped display

Questions about this topic
How can a variable written with numbers still be categorical?+
The numbers may be labels for groups rather than measurements or counts. A postcode or route code is categorical when arithmetic on the labels has no meaning
Which display is used for two categorical variables?+
Use a percentage segmented bar chart, with one whole bar for each explanatory group and response categories forming the segments
How are the explanatory and response variables identified?+
Read the question wording. The variable used to explain or compare variation is explanatory, and the variable whose variation is described is the response
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, General Mathematics, chapter 2: Association between variables
