Interpret an association in context

A study reports a positive association between weekly practice time and a test score. What should be tracked first?

Predict what happens to the visible markers when C moves to length 4 cm. Change C’s length to 4, then to 5. Its mass stays 40 g and all four case records remain

When B and C coincide, what happens to the number of cases?

Interpreting an association

An association describes a tendency in paired data. State how the response variable tends to change as the explanatory variable changes, and limit the conclusion to the observed cases

1. 1Start with the roles Name the explanatory variable first and the response variable second \(\displaystyle \text{EV}=x,\quad\text{RV}=y\)
2. 2Preserve the direction A positive association has the same general movement; a negative association has opposite movement \(\displaystyle \text{positive: }x\uparrow\Rightarrow y\uparrow,\quad\text{negative: }x\uparrow\Rightarrow y\downarrow\)
3. 3Use tendency wording Use words such as tends to or generally because individual cases can differ \(\displaystyle \text{as }x\text{ increases, }y\text{ tends to increase}\)
4. 4Do not claim causation An observed association does not show that changing one variable causes the other to change \(\displaystyle \text{association}\not\Rightarrow\text{causation}\)

What kind of conclusion does an association support?

As weekly practice time increases, what does the score tend to do in a positive association?

A study reports a positive association between weekly practice time and score, using practice time as explanatory. Which direction statement matches that report?

A scatterplot has five visible marker positions but does not say whether points overlap. What is justified?

There is no recorded point at horizontal distance 5 hundred km. Does the scatterplot give an observed fuel value for that distance?

A vertical axis starts at 20 rather than zero. How should a point be read?

If association alone does not prove causation, does that prove there is no causal connection?

A report finds a strong association in a voluntary online sample of 20 people. What should be checked before generalising?

Write and check a complete contextual association report

Use these nine fictional workshop records: 01: (4.2 minutes,3 items); 02: (5.1 minutes,4 items); 03: (3.5 minutes,2 items); 04: (6 minutes,5 items); 05: (5.4 minutes,4 items); 06: (4.6 minutes,3 items); 07: (2.8 minutes,1 item); 08: (6.7 minutes,6 items); 09: (4.6 minutes,3 items). Write a complete report treating duration as explanatory and item count as response. Give the sample size, recorded ranges, direction, approximate form, visible clustering and an explicit limitation

1. 1Critique a claim Evaluate: “Every additional minute causes exactly one more item for every participant, so a 20-minute task must follow the same rule.” Use actual cases to distinguish an overall tendency from an exact rule. Explain whether the data contain an observation at exactly 5 minutes, and whether a model prediction there would be a recorded observation
2. 2Interpret a negative case Separately, four fictional trips have paired (distance in km, remaining battery charge in %) values (2,48),(4,44),(6,43),(8,38). Describe how charge tends to change with distance for these trips. State why changing the variables, units or research question must be explicit and why the small observational list does not establish a universal intervention effect
3. 3Choose and verify technology Choose a table/plot tool to check the evidence cited in each report. Record selected paired columns, labels, observed ranges, any overlap and the method of checking a claimed observation. Keep observations distinct from model outputs and identify sample-selection or measurement information that would be needed before generalising
4. 4Complete before continuing Save your complete labelled plots, written report and technology record before opening the model response. Complete drawing, writing and external-tool execution are not automatically marked; use self or teacher review

Model response: report a tendency with its evidence

The workshop records (duration in minutes, items) are (4.2,3), (5.1,4), (3.5,2), (6,5), (5.4,4), (4.6,3), (2.8,1), (6.7,6) and (4.6,3). Among the nine fictional workshop records, larger recorded durations generally accompany more recorded items. Duration ranges from 2.8 to 6.7 minutes and item counts from 1 to 6. The plotted points show a close, approximately linear positive pattern, with nine records occupying eight positions because two cases coincide. These are descriptive observations from a small supplied sample, not a population or causal conclusion

1. 1Test the stronger claim The exact one-item-per-minute claim is unsupported: 4.2 and 4.6 minutes both occur with three items, and the observed pairs do not define that universal rule. No case has duration exactly 5 minutes. A value estimated there would be a model output, not an observation; 20 minutes is outside the observed duration range and has no support from this sample alone. Experience, task difficulty, selection and measurement conditions are possible issues to investigate, not established explanations
2. 2A negative contextual report The trip records (distance in km, remaining charge in %) are (2,48), (4,44), (6,43) and (8,38). In the four fictional trips, greater distance generally accompanies lower remaining charge: it falls from 48% at 2 km to 38% at 8 km, with intermediate values 44% and 43%. Distance is explanatory and remaining charge is response in the stated question. The decreases are not equal for every 2 km, and this observational list does not prove that every additional kilometre causes one fixed charge reduction under all conditions
3. 3One reproducible workflow Plot Minutes against Items using all nine original rows; check the range and duplicate position, then filter for Minutes=5 and verify that no row matches. Compare the actual rows at 4.2/4.6 rather than using a smooth line as evidence of recorded values. For the trip list, preserve (Distance,Charge) pairs and verify both units and all four values. Record the sample and observation limits in the report; an external plot or calculation still needs inspection

No record occurs at exactly 5 minutes. A fitted model returns a predicted item count there. How should that predicted value be classified?

Four trips record (distance in km, remaining charge in %) as (2,48), (4,44), (6,43) and (8,38). What is the appropriate contextual direction statement?
