Algebraic fraction products and quotients
Factorise, record excluded values, and cancel only complete common factors. For division, take the reciprocal of the divisor first
- Nonzero denominators Every original denominator must be nonzero. A divisor must also be nonzero
- Multiply numerators and denominators Coefficients reduce as ordinary fractions; combine pronumeral factors using exponent laws \(\displaystyle \frac{3x}{4}\times\frac{8y}{9}=\frac{2xy}{3}\)
- Reverse only the divisor Here b, c and d must all be nonzero \(\displaystyle \frac{a}{b}\div\frac{c}{d}=\frac{a}{b}\times\frac{d}{c}\)
- Cancel complete factors For x nonzero, remove the common factor 3x from both sides of the fraction bar \(\displaystyle \frac{6x(x+4)}{9x}=\frac{2(x+4)}{3}\)
- Keep original exclusions A simplified formula can be defined at more inputs than the original. Use it only on the original domain
Worked example
Simplify the quotient. The original restrictions are x nonzero and x not equal to 2.
- \(\displaystyle \frac{8x}{3(x-2)}\times\frac{9(x-2)}{4x}\)Keep the first fraction and reverse the divisor
- \(\displaystyle \frac{8\times9}{3\times4}\)Cancel the complete factors x and x - 2 from numerator and denominator
- \(\displaystyle \frac{72}{12}=6\)Reduce the numerical coefficient
- \(\displaystyle 6\)The value is 6 for the allowed inputs only. Keep x nonzero and x not equal to 2.

Questions about this topic
Can I cancel the x terms in two sums?+
Only if x is a factor of each whole expression. A matching term inside a sum is not enough
Why must the divisor be nonzero?+
Division by zero is undefined. In a fraction divisor, both its denominator and its numerator must be nonzero
Do excluded values disappear after cancellation?+
No. The simplified form represents the original only on its original domain
Does one matching input prove two expressions are equivalent?+
No. One input is a check. Use valid factorisation and cancellation to establish equivalence for all allowed inputs
What if the factors have opposite signs?+
Use a negative sign to rewrite one factor. For example, 4 - x is negative (x - 4)
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 10 Mathematics, chapter 3: Algebra and indices
