Form and evaluate
Preserve the stated order and grouping. When substituting, replace every occurrence and check that no denominator becomes zero
- Name the operation A sum adds, a difference subtracts, a product multiplies and a quotient divides \(\displaystyle 3x=3\times x\)
- Keep the order Four less than a quantity means start with that quantity and subtract four \(\displaystyle x-4\)
- Group before dividing The fraction bar divides the entire numerator by the denominator \(\displaystyle \frac{x+8}{4}\)
- Substitute every occurrence Put negative values in brackets, then follow brackets, powers, multiplication/division and addition/subtraction \(\displaystyle 3(-2)^2-2(-2)=16\)
Worked example
Evaluate when x is negative four
- \(\displaystyle 3(-4)^2-5\)Substitute the negative value in brackets
- \(\displaystyle 3\times16-5\)Square the substituted value first
- \(\displaystyle 48-5\)Multiply by the coefficient
- \(\displaystyle 43\)Subtract to obtain the exact value

Questions about this topic
What is the difference between forming and evaluating?+
Forming translates a description into symbols. Evaluating substitutes assigned values and calculates the resulting number
Why use brackets around negative substitutions?+
They keep the sign attached to the substituted value, especially when a power or another minus sign is involved
Does agreement at one value prove equivalence?+
No. Different expressions can give the same result at one value. The graph experiment gives an example
Can an answer be a fraction?+
Yes. Keep an exact fraction unless the question specifically asks for rounding. Exact terminating decimals are also accepted here
What if substitution gives a zero denominator?+
The expression is undefined at that value. Do not divide by zero or replace the result with zero
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 10 Mathematics, chapter 3: Algebra and indices
