Flat-rate depreciation
Each equal period removes the same amount, calculated from the original purchase price
- Positive loss P is the purchase price, r is the annual percentage number and D is the amount lost each year \(\displaystyle D=Pr/100\)
- Recurrence Start at V₀ = P and subtract D. \(\displaystyle V_{n+1}=V_n-D\)
- Explicit rule Subtract n losses \(\displaystyle V_n=P-nD\)
- Total loss Do not confuse loss with remaining value \(\displaystyle L_n=nD\)
Worked example
Equipment bought for $6,000 depreciates at 8% of its purchase price per year. Find the value after four years
- \(\displaystyle D=6000\times8/100=480\)The fixed yearly loss is $480
- \(\displaystyle 4D=4\times480=1920\)The total loss after four years is $1,920
- \(\displaystyle V_4=6000-1920=4080\)The remaining value is $4,080

Questions about this topic
Is flat-rate the same as reducing-balance?+
No. Flat-rate uses the purchase price; reducing-balance uses the changing value
Is the loss negative?+
The amount lost D is positive. The signed change in value is −D.
Can I extend the model forever?+
No. Its useful range must fit the context; a negative resale value is not realistic here
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 3: Sequences and finance
