Interpret a financial recurrence
Read the meaning of the index before interpreting a change
- Initial value V₀ is the start before any updates
- Fixed amount The added or subtracted dollar amount is not itself a percentage
- Percentage Let D be the positive yearly dollar amount and r the percentage number. Compare D with the original start V₀ \(\displaystyle r=100D/V_0\)
- Direction and period Addition grows; subtraction decays. The index definition determines the period
Worked example
A value starts at $8,000 and increases by $240 each year. Find the simple-interest rate
- \(\displaystyle D/V_0=240/8000=0.03\)First find the proportion of the initial value
- \(\displaystyle r=0.03\times100=3\)The yearly rate is 3%, entered as 3 in a percentage field

Questions about this topic
Why use the starting value?+
Simple interest and flat-rate depreciation calculate their fixed amount from the original value
Does subtraction mean a negative percentage answer?+
Here the question asks for the positive rate of depreciation. The subtraction already expresses decay
What should I type beside a % label?+
Type the percentage number, such as 3.75, not its decimal ratio 0.0375. Follow any stated precision
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 3: Sequences and finance
