A direct financial rule
The later value is the start plus all the signed changes
- Signed form Use positive D for growth and negative D for decay \(\displaystyle V_n=V_0+nD\)
- Positive-loss form If D names a positive loss, subtract it \(\displaystyle V_n=V_0-nD\)
- Counting updates From index zero to n there are n updates
- Total versus value Total interest or loss excludes the initial amount
Worked example
Equipment starts at $7,500 and loses $450 each year. Find its value after four years
- \(\displaystyle D=-450\)The signed change is negative
- \(\displaystyle V_4=7500+4(-450)\)Include four changes from year zero
- \(\displaystyle V_4=5700\)The value is $5,700. The total loss is $1,800

Questions about this topic
Can I always use n − 1?+
No. Use n updates from V₀. A different starting index changes the count
Should a loss be positive or negative?+
A positive amount lost is subtracted. A signed change for decay is negative and is added
Why not iterate every year?+
You can, but the explicit rule combines all the equal changes in one calculation
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 3: Sequences and finance
