Complete linear financial models
Choose the correct index and representation, then check that the rule matches the starting amount and one later value
- Recurrence: use the previous value State the starting value and how to get the next value. If a model starts at 6000 and loses 750 each year, subtract 750 from the previous value \(\displaystyle V_0=6000,\quad V_{n+1}=V_n-750\)
- Explicit rule: use the index Start with the original amount and apply the change n times. This gives any term without finding all the earlier terms \(\displaystyle V_n=6000-750n\)
- Keep the index unit clear A yearly model uses loss per year. A distance model uses loss per kilometre. Convert cents to dollars before writing a dollar-value rule
- Compare in the stated order For B minus A, subtract both A’s starting amount and A’s yearly change. A negative difference means B has less; it is not a negative bank balance
- Reverse a usage rate Find total loss and total use over the same period, then divide loss by use
- Check equality at a threshold Reaches includes equality. Strictly exceeds does not. Compare the values at the candidate year and the year immediately before it
Worked example
Fund A starts with $18,000 and earns 3% simple interest per year. Fund B starts with $15,000 and earns 6% simple interest per year. There are no deposits or withdrawals. A_n and B_n are the balances in dollars after n years. Define D_n = B_n − A_n; a negative difference means B has less
Write an explicit rule for D_n directly in terms of n.
Calculate D_5, the signed difference after 5 years
Subtract the starting balances and the yearly changes in the stated order: (15000 + 900n) − (18000 + 540n)
\[D_n=-3000+360n\]- \[D_{5}=-3000+360\times5=-1200\]
The negative result means Fund B still has less

Questions about this topic
How do I enter a complete rule?+
Use V_n or V(n). For a recurrence, enter both equations separated by a semicolon, for example V(0)=100; V(n+1)=V(n)+5.
Are equivalent expressions accepted?+
Yes, reordered and factored linear expressions are compared exactly. The requested form still matters: an explicit rule is not a recurrence. Only the stated linear notation is supported, not arbitrary algebra, powers or inequalities
Does a model remain valid forever?+
No. Use the stated fixed rates and time or usage interval. Do not extend a depreciation model to negative asset values or treat a simple-interest model as compound interest
Does this replace written explanations in an exam?+
No. Complete rules and numerical results are marked objectively here. Independent written justification and the rest of the senior course still require separate practice
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 3: Sequences and finance
