Find the first index
Translate the threshold accurately and keep the index an integer
- Reaches Equality satisfies the condition
- Exceeds or falls below Equality does not satisfy a strict condition
- Negative division Reverse the inequality when dividing by a negative difference
- First Check the chosen term works and the previous term does not
Worked example
Find the first index for which the term exceeds 21
- \(\displaystyle 5+4n>21\)Exceeds is strict
- \(\displaystyle n>4\)The smallest integer is 5.
- \(\displaystyle t_4=21\)Equality does not work
- \(\displaystyle t_5=25\)This works, so the first index is 5.

Questions about this topic
Should I always round up?+
No. Solve the exact condition and choose the smallest allowed integer. A strict inequality at an integer boundary requires the next integer; an inclusive one may allow equality
What if the first term already meets the condition?+
Use its index. In these examples that is zero
Does the previous term also need checking?+
Yes, unless the answer is the initial index. For a monotonic sequence it shows why the chosen index is the first
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 3: Sequences and finance
