Read indices and values
Use the indexing convention stated in the problem. These exercises start at zero
- Index to value Find the requested position, then read the value there \(\displaystyle t_2=17\)
- Value to index If t₂ is the unique displayed term equal to 17, the requested index is 2 \(\displaystyle t_n=17\quad\Rightarrow\quad n=2\)
- Applications and terms From index zero to index k takes k updates and includes k + 1 terms
Worked example
A sequence begins at index zero with values 10, 7, 4, 1. Find t₂, the index of value 1, and the number of updates to t₃
- \(\displaystyle t_2=4\)Index 2 is the third position
- \(\displaystyle t_3=1\)The value 1 occurs at index 3
- \(\displaystyle 3-0=3\)Three updates reach index 3; four values are listed

Questions about this topic
Must every sequence begin at index zero?+
No. These questions state that convention. Use the starting index given in another problem
Can two terms have the same value?+
Yes. Different indices may have equal values. An inverse lookup can then have more than one answer
Does the subscript tell me to raise a value to a power?+
No. It labels a position in the sequence
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 3: Sequences and finance
