Interpreting slope and intercept
In y-hat = a + bx, b describes the estimated average change in the response for each one-unit increase in the explanatory variable. a is the model's estimated response when the explanatory variable is zero, even when zero is outside the observed range
- Identify the roles Use the question to decide which variable is explanatory and which is response \(\displaystyle x=\text{training hours},\quad y=\text{race time}\)
- Read slope units The slope has response units per explanatory unit \(\displaystyle b=-1.5\frac{\text{s}}{\text{h}}\)
- State the per-unit change Include the direction and the word average when interpreting a fitted-model slope \(\displaystyle h\text{ increases by }1\Rightarrow\widehat{t}\text{ decreases by }1.5\text{ s}\)
- Interpret the intercept The intercept is the modelled response at explanatory value zero, but it is not a typical observed value unless zero is in a meaningful range \(\displaystyle a=42,\quad h=0\Rightarrow\widehat{t}=42\)
Worked example
A fitted model estimates race time from training hours. The observed training-hour range is 4 to 10. Interpret the slope and intercept
- \(\displaystyle b=-1.5\frac{\text{s}}{\text{h}}\)The slope is the response change per one additional training hour
- \(\displaystyle h\text{ increases by }1\Rightarrow\widehat{t}\text{ decreases by }1.5\text{ s on average}\)The negative sign gives the direction and the coefficient gives the average amount
- \(\displaystyle a=42\text{ s},\quad h=0\Rightarrow\widehat{t}=42\text{ s}\)The intercept is the predicted race time when training hours are zero
- \(\displaystyle 0\notin[4,10]\)Zero training hours is outside the observed range, so 42 seconds is not a typical observed race time

Questions about this topic
What are the units of a slope?+
A slope has response units per explanatory-variable unit. For example, a slope of −1.5 seconds per hour means an average decrease of 1.5 seconds for each extra hour
Is the intercept always meaningful in context?+
The intercept is always an arithmetic part of the model, but its context meaning may not be useful when an explanatory value of zero is impossible or outside the observed range
Why is an average change used for a fitted-model slope?+
A fitted line describes the overall tendency of paired data. Individual cases can differ from the average change shown by the slope
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, General Mathematics, chapter 3: Linear regression
