Predicting from a fitted model
A fitted model predicts the response by substituting an explanatory-variable value into the formula. The prediction is interpolation when that value is within the inclusive observed range and extrapolation when it is outside
- Identify the variables Use x for the explanatory variable and y for the response variable in the fitted model \(\displaystyle x=\text{EV},\quad y=\text{RV}\)
- Substitute the explanatory value Replace x with the stated explanatory value before simplifying the model \(\displaystyle \hat{y}=12+3\left(5\right)=27\)
- Classify the range position A value inside or at an endpoint of the observed explanatory range gives interpolation; a value outside gives extrapolation \(\displaystyle 20\le x\le40\Rightarrow\text{interpolation}\)
- Judge the prediction Interpolation is supported by the observed explanatory values, while extrapolation extends the model beyond those values \(\displaystyle x<20\text{ or }x>40\Rightarrow\text{extrapolation}\)
Worked example
The fitted model predicts water use in litres from garden area in square metres. It was fitted using garden areas from 10 to 40 square metres. Predict water use for an area of 25 square metres and classify the prediction
- \(\displaystyle 0.8\times25=20\)Multiply the slope by the explanatory value
- \(\displaystyle \hat{y}=24+20=44\)Add the intercept to get a predicted water use of 44 litres
- \(\displaystyle 10\le25\le40\Rightarrow\text{interpolation}\)The explanatory value 25 is within the observed range from 10 to 40.

Questions about this topic
How is interpolation different from extrapolation?+
Interpolation uses an explanatory value inside the inclusive observed range. Extrapolation uses a value outside that range
Why is extrapolation less reliable?+
The fitted model has been supported by data only across the observed explanatory range. Outside that range, the pattern may change
Why is the slope multiplied before the intercept is added?+
The model is y = a + bx, so the product bx is found first and then the intercept a is added
Does interpolation guarantee accuracy?+
No. It identifies the input as within the observed range. Inspect fit, residuals, unusual cases and comparability of conditions, and distinguish average predictions from individual outcomes
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, General Mathematics, chapter 3: Linear regression
