Venn diagrams and sets
Translate the event into membership conditions, identify its disjoint regions, then count. Circle areas are schematic, not measures of probability
- The universe S contains every possible selected item. Each item occupies one disjoint region. The notation N(A) counts all items in A.
- Both and at least one An intersection means both conditions hold. A union includes either condition, including both \(\displaystyle A\cap B\quad\text{and}\quad A\cup B\)
- Complement The complement of A is everything in S outside A, including B-only and neither \(\displaystyle A^{\prime}=S\setminus A\)
- Only is narrower than a whole set A-only excludes B. With three sets, A-only excludes both B and C. \(\displaystyle A\cap B^{\prime}\cap C^{\prime}\)
- Probability needs a model If one item is selected uniformly, divide the favourable count by the universe count \(\displaystyle \Pr(E)=\frac{N(E)}{N(S)}\)
Worked example
A collection contains 28 individually numbered items. The four regions contain 9 in A only, 5 in B only, 6 in both and 8 in neither. Select one item uniformly. Find the probability of not A.
- \(\displaystyle N(S)=9+5+6+8=28\)Add every disjoint region once
- \(\displaystyle N(A^{\prime})=5+8=13\)Outside A includes B-only and neither
- \(\displaystyle \Pr(A^{\prime})=\frac{13}{28}\)Divide by the full universe count

Questions about this topic
Does or include both?+
Yes. Unless exactly one or another exclusion is stated, A or B means the union and includes the overlap
What does the prime mark mean?+
A prime means the complement of A: every item in the specified universe that is outside A.
Does A intersection B exclude C?+
No. In a three-set diagram it includes the all-three region. Exclude C explicitly when the question says A and B only
Are circle sizes proportional to counts?+
No. Use the displayed counts or listed memberships, not the drawn areas
Why state uniform selection?+
Counts divided by the universe count give exact probabilities only when each item has the same chance of selection
Can a region be empty?+
Yes. A zero count is valid. At overlap zero, A and B are mutually exclusive
Where is conditional probability taught?+
The later conditional-probability section changes the sample space when a condition is known. Here the selection is from the whole universe
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 10 Mathematics, chapter 4: Probability
