Add and subtract matrices
Matrix addition and subtraction are defined only when the two matrices have the same order. Combine entries at the same row and column, and keep the common order
- Check the order Addition and subtraction are defined only when both matrices have the same number of rows and columns \(\displaystyle A:2\times3,\quad B:2\times3\quad\Rightarrow\quad A\pm B\text{ is defined}\)
- Match positions Combine entries with the same row number and column number \(\displaystyle (A+B)_{12}=a_{12}+b_{12}\)
- Keep the subtraction direction For A-B, subtract the entry of B from the entry of A at every position \(\displaystyle (A-B)_{21}=a_{21}-b_{21}\)
- Keep the common order The result has the same order as the two matrices being combined \(\displaystyle A,B:2\times3\quad\Rightarrow\quad A-B:2\times3\)
Worked example
Calculate A-B for the two matrices
- \(\displaystyle A\text{ and }B\text{ are both }2\times2\text{ matrices}\)The matrices have the same order, so their difference is defined
- \(\displaystyle A-B=\begin{bmatrix}9-3&(-4)-(-6)\\6-8&7-2\end{bmatrix}\)Subtract the corresponding entry of B from the entry of A at each position
- \(\displaystyle 9-3=6,\quad (-4)-(-6)=2,\quad 6-8=-2,\quad 7-2=5\)Evaluate each corresponding subtraction, including the double negative in the top right position
- \(\displaystyle A-B=\begin{bmatrix}6&2\\-2&5\end{bmatrix}\)The difference keeps the common order 2 by 2.

Questions about this topic
Why must two matrices have the same order before they are added?+
Each entry is paired with the entry at the same row and column in the other matrix, so both dimensions must match
Does subtracting matrices change their order?+
No. The difference has the same order as the two matrices being subtracted
How is a negative entry handled in a difference?+
Keep the written order and subtract the negative entry, for example, subtracting negative 6 from negative 4 gives 2.
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 4: Matrices
