Powers of matrices
A matrix power is formed by multiplying a square matrix by itself repeatedly. Each multiplication uses rows against columns, so the entries are not powered one at a time
- Use a square matrix A matrix can be multiplied by itself only when its number of rows equals its number of columns \(\displaystyle R_{2 \times 3}^{2}\text{ is undefined}\)
- Repeat matrix multiplication The exponent tells how many copies of the same matrix are multiplied in order \(\displaystyle A^{3}=A \times A \times A\)
- Use rows and columns Each entry of a power is found from a row of the left factor and a column of the right factor \(\displaystyle (A^{2})_{11}=2 \times 2+1 \times 3\)
- Add the paired products A matrix power is not found by raising each entry separately \(\displaystyle \begin{bmatrix}2&1\\3&0\end{bmatrix}^{2}=\begin{bmatrix}7&2\\6&3\end{bmatrix}\)
Worked example
Evaluate A squared for the matrix shown below
- \(\displaystyle A^{2}=A \times A=\begin{bmatrix}2&1\\3&0\end{bmatrix}\begin{bmatrix}2&1\\3&0\end{bmatrix}\)The square means that A is multiplied by A.
- \(\displaystyle (A^{2})_{11}=2 \times 2+1 \times 3=4+3=7\)Use row 1 of the first A and column 1 of the second A.
- \(\displaystyle (A^{2})_{12}=2 \times 1+1 \times 0=2,\quad (A^{2})_{21}=3 \times 2+0 \times 3=6\)The other off-diagonal entries use the same row-by-column method
- \(\displaystyle (A^{2})_{22}=3 \times 1+0 \times 0=3,\quad A^{2}=\begin{bmatrix}7&2\\6&3\end{bmatrix}\)The four entries form the square of A.

Questions about this topic
What does A squared mean for a matrix?+
It means A multiplied by A. The multiplication is matrix multiplication, so each entry is formed from a row and a column
Why must a matrix be square to multiply it by itself?+
The matrix must be multiplied by itself. The first matrix's column count must therefore equal its own row count
Is a matrix power found by powering each entry?+
No. Powering each entry separately is a different operation. A matrix power uses repeated row-by-column multiplication
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 4: Matrices
