Fitting a transformed regression
A transformed regression fits a straight line to the selected transformed pair. Keep the explanatory list first, read the intercept and slope in the stated order, and retain the transformation when the equation is written
- Put the explanatory list first Use the explanatory variable as the x-list and the response variable as the y-list \(\displaystyle x'=\text{transformed EV},\quad y'=\text{transformed RV}\)
- Transform the selected list Change the named axis before fitting and leave the other axis on its original scale \(\displaystyle x'=x^{2},\quad y'=y\)
- Read the coefficients in order Use the calculator output convention stated in the question for the intercept and slope \(\displaystyle a=6,\quad b=2.5\)
- Keep the transform visible Write the fitted line with the actual variable names and attach the transformation to the changed variable \(\displaystyle \widehat{y}=a+b x^{2}\)
Worked example
For paired observations with explanatory value x and response value y, a least-squares fit is made after squaring x. Technology reports an intercept of 5 and a slope of 3. Write the equation and use it when x = 4.
- \(\displaystyle x'=4^{2}=16\)Square the explanatory input before using the transformed regression
- \(\displaystyle \widehat{y'}=a+b x'=5+3x'\)Place the technology intercept and slope in the line for the transformed pair
- \(\displaystyle \widehat{y}=5+3x^{2}\)Replace the transformed symbols with the original variable names and keep the square on x.
- \(\displaystyle \widehat{y}=5+3\times16=53\)Substitute the transformed coordinate 16 to obtain the predicted response

Questions about this topic
Why is the explanatory list entered first?+
Regression predicts the response from the explanatory variable, so the explanatory coordinate must be the x-coordinate and the response coordinate the y-coordinate
Why must the transformation remain in the equation?+
The fitted line was calculated using the transformed coordinate. Removing the transformation changes the model being used
What do the intercept and slope describe here?+
They describe the fitted straight line on the transformed coordinate scale. The slope multiplies the transformed explanatory coordinate
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, General Mathematics, chapter 4: Data transformation
