Perimeter and area of composite shapes
A composite shape is made from simpler regions. Find any missing boundary lengths, trace only the outside for perimeter, and split or subtract regions for area
- Recover missing lengths Subtract a smaller labelled span from the matching larger span \(\displaystyle 9\text{ m}-3\text{ m}=6\text{ m}\)
- Trace the outside once Add every outside side and leave out joins between component regions \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}P=12+6+4+3+8+9\\=42\text{ m}\end{gathered}\)
- Add non-overlapping pieces Split an attached shape into standard regions that cover it exactly once \(\displaystyle A=(8\times9)+(4\times6)=96\text{ m}^2\)
- Subtract a cut-out Remove the area of a missing region from the enclosing rectangle \(\displaystyle A=12\times9-4\times3=96\text{ m}^2\)
Worked example
A 15 cm by 10 cm rectangle has a 5 cm by 4 cm rectangular corner removed from its top right. Find the perimeter and area of the remaining composite shape
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}10-4=6\text{ cm}\\15-5=10\text{ cm}\end{gathered}\)Subtract the cut-out height from the outer height for the vertical side, and the cut-out width from the outer width for the remaining top side
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}P=15+6+5+4\\{}+10+10=50\text{ cm}\end{gathered}\)Add the six outside sides once and do not count the internal join
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}A=15\times10-5\times4\\=150-20=130\text{ cm}^2\end{gathered}\)Subtract the cut-out area from the enclosing rectangle

Questions about this topic
What is included in a composite perimeter?+
Only the complete outside boundary is included. A join between two component regions is internal and is not counted
How can a missing side be found?+
Use the difference between matching parallel spans, such as an outer height minus the height of a cut-out
When is a region added or subtracted for area?+
Add a region joined to the shape, and subtract a region removed from an enclosing shape
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 9 Mathematics, chapter 5: Measurement
