Exact expressions involving pi
Multiply the numerical factors next to π and leave π as π. Add or subtract only terms with the same form
- Multiply numerical factors Multiply the numbers that form the coefficient of π \(\displaystyle 3\times4\pi=12\pi\)
- Keep unlike terms separate A constant and a π term do not have the same form \(\displaystyle 5+12\pi\)
- Simplify fractional coefficients Multiply a fraction by the numerical factor before π \(\displaystyle \frac{2}{3}\times9\pi=6\pi\)
- Approximate only at the end Keep the exact expression until a decimal answer is requested \(\displaystyle 18\pi\approx56.55\)
Worked example
Simplify the expression and give its decimal value to 2 decimal places
- \(\displaystyle \frac{2}{3}\times9=6\)The numerical coefficient of π is 6
- \(\displaystyle E=2+6\pi\)The constant 2 stays separate from the exact π term
- \(\displaystyle a=2,\quad b=6\)The exact expression has constant part 2 and π coefficient 6
- \(\displaystyle 2+6\pi\approx20.85\)The decimal value is found after the exact expression has been simplified

Questions about this topic
Why cannot a constant be added to a π term?+
They are unlike terms because one has no π factor and the other has π, so the exact result keeps both parts
How do I find the coefficient of π?+
Multiply all numerical factors attached to π, including any fraction, and leave π beside the resulting number
When should I use a decimal approximation?+
Use a decimal only when the question asks for one, and keep π exact during earlier steps
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 9 Mathematics, chapter 5: Measurement
