Linear modelling
A constant starting value and a constant signed rate give an affine rule. Direct proportion is the special case with zero starting value
- Predict Substitute an allowed input in the model’s unit
- Reach a target Set the output equal to the target and solve for the input
- Domain Check the interval and any whole-number condition
Worked example
A service charges a one-off fee a dollars and a rate b dollars per hour. C is the total cost in dollars after h hours. Find the cost for three hours
- \(\displaystyle C=40+15h\)Combine the one-off fee and hourly charge
- \(\displaystyle C(3)=40+15(3)=85\)Substitute the permitted time

Questions about this topic
Are fractional inputs always allowed?+
No. Time or measured usage may be continuous, while counts and whole-day charges can require integers. Read the stated conditions
Can a formula be evaluated outside its domain?+
The arithmetic may be possible, but that does not make the result a supported prediction for the stated situation
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 5: Linear functions and models
