Interpret a model graph
Read the initial value, rate and domain with their units. A selected equation is recognition; a numeric prediction can be obtained from the model or its graph
- Read forward Start with the input and read the corresponding output
- Read in reverse Start with the target output and find the corresponding input
- Scale Use the axis multiplier before quoting a base-unit response
Worked example
A model graph passes through these readings. Find its rate and the output at input five
- \(\displaystyle b=\frac{22-14}{3-1}=4\)Divide the interval change by the input interval
- \(\displaystyle a=14-4(1)=10\)Recover the starting value
- \(\displaystyle y=10+4x\)Write the model in graph units
- \(\displaystyle y(5)=10+4(5)=30\)Substitute the requested input within the model’s stated domain

Questions about this topic
Why divide an interval change by its input interval?+
A rate is the output change for one input unit. The marked points may be several units apart
Does a formula justify predictions beyond the drawn domain?+
No. A calculated value outside the stated domain is not automatically supported by the model
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 10 Mathematics, chapter 6: Linear graphs
