Write direct-variation equations
Direct variation can be with x itself or with a stated power of x.
- Keep the stated power For y directly proportional to xⁿ, divide the known output by the powered input to find k. \(\displaystyle y=kx^n,\qquad k=y/x^n\)
- Use the completed rule Substitute for a forward value. Undo multiplication and then the power for a reverse value. Use the domain stated in the problem
- Check the invariant The ratio y/xⁿ is fixed at nonzero x. A changing y/x ratio does not rule out direct variation with a different stated power
Worked example
The output u varies directly as v cubed. It equals 54 when v=3. Write the completed rule
- \(\displaystyle u=kv^3\)Keep the stated cube
- \(\displaystyle 54=27k\quad\Rightarrow\quad k=2\)Find the constant from the known pair
- \(\displaystyle u=2v^3\)State the whole rule, not only its constant

Questions about this topic
Is k the same as the known output?+
Only in special cases. Substitute the known pair into the stated powered rule to calculate k.
Does every increasing pattern show direct variation?+
No. Test the invariant for the stated power and check the domain
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 9: Variation
