Logarithmic input transformations
Work in transformed coordinates, then distinguish them from the original positive input
- Log the explanatory variable only For the General logarithmic input model, plot y against t=log₁₀(x). Keep the response on its original scale; logging y would test a different model
- Require positive inputs All original inputs must be strictly positive. A negative transformed input is allowed when 0<x<1.
- Check every transformed slope Compute with the transformed horizontal differences. Powers of ten give exact integer inputs; for other values retain calculator precision. Unequal slopes reject exact linearity
Worked example
Transform the explanatory values and check linearity for all three observations
- \(\displaystyle (t,y)=(0,4),(1,6),(2,8)\)Take base-10 logs of x and retain y.
- \(\displaystyle (6-4)/(1-0)=2,\quad(8-6)/(2-1)=2\)Both slopes equal two, so the supplied exact points are collinear

Questions about this topic
Why is there no introductory generated tier for this placement?+
The logarithm lesson supplies the introductory calculations. This retained bank starts with combined transformation tasks at challenge level
Must I log both coordinates?+
No. This placement logs only the explanatory x-values. Logging the response would test a different relationship
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 9: Variation
