Comparing quantities on a log scale
A base-10 log scale records multiplicative size using exponents, which keeps quantities spanning several powers of ten in a readable range. To compare two original quantities, subtract their log values and then apply the corresponding power of 10.
- Keep the requested order of comparison For A/B, subtract the logarithm of B from the logarithm of A. Do not automatically put the larger logged value first: the requested difference can be negative \(\displaystyle \log_{10}(A/u)-\log_{10}(B/u)=\log_{10}(A/B)\)
- Raise 10 to the difference The difference is an exponent, so the factor between the original quantities is 10 raised to that difference \(\displaystyle 10^3=1000\)
- Interpret one log unit as a factor of ten A one-unit increase on a base-10 log scale multiplies the underlying quantity by 10. \(\displaystyle \log_{10}(A)-\log_{10}(B)=1\Rightarrow\frac{A}{B}=10\)
- Use a log scale for wide ranges Values separated by several powers of ten occupy a shorter, readable range when their logarithms are displayed \(\displaystyle 10^0,10^1,10^2,10^3,10^4,10^5,10^6\Rightarrow0,1,2,3,4,5,6\)
Worked example
Two generated cases have base-10 log values 1 and 4 for the same positive quantity. Find how many times larger the second quantity is than the first
- \(\displaystyle 4-1=3\)The requested ratio is B/A, so subtract the logarithm of A from the logarithm of B.
- \(\displaystyle 10^3=1000\)Use the log difference as the exponent of 10.
- \(\displaystyle \frac{B}{A}=1000\)The second quantity is 1000 times the first quantity

Questions about this topic
Why are logarithms useful for very different-sized quantities?+
A multiplicative range becomes an additive range of exponents. Several powers of ten can therefore be displayed in a shorter numerical interval
What does a difference of two on a base-10 log scale mean?+
It means that the original quantities differ by a factor of ten squared, which is 100.
Why are the logarithms subtracted?+
For positive A and B, subtracting the base-10 logarithm of B from that of A gives the base-10 logarithm of their ratio, so the difference records the exponent of the ratio
Can a comparison ratio be below one?+
Yes. Keep the requested order: a negative log difference gives a positive ratio below one
Does a negative log coordinate mean a negative measurement?+
No. It means a positive measurement below the chosen reference unit
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 9: Variation
