Build a connection matrix
A connection matrix has one row and one column for each vertex, in the declared order. Each entry counts direct connections from the row vertex to the column vertex, so direction, loops and repeated connections affect the entries
- Use one vertex order Use the same declared vertex order for the rows and the columns \(\displaystyle \text{order of }M = 3 \times 3\)
- Count direct connections Enter the number of direct connections between the named row and column vertices \(\displaystyle M_{12}=2\)
- Record loops on the diagonal A connection from a vertex to itself is recorded on the leading diagonal. For example, exactly one loop at vertex 2 gives the entry below \(\displaystyle M_{22}=1\)
- Mirror two-way connections A two-way connection contributes to both mirrored positions. For example, exactly one two-way link and no other links between vertices 1 and 2 gives the entries below \(\displaystyle M_{12}=M_{21}=1\)
Worked example
A directed network has vertices A, B and C in that order. The only links are A to B, a loop at B and C to A. Construct its connection matrix
- \(\displaystyle \text{order of }M = 3 \times 3\)There is one row and one column for each of the three vertices
- \(\displaystyle M_{11}=0,\quad M_{12}=1,\quad M_{13}=0\)The row for A records no loop, A to B and no link from A to C.
- \(\displaystyle M_{21}=0,\quad M_{22}=1,\quad M_{23}=0\)The row for B records only the loop at B.
- \(\displaystyle M_{31}=1,\quad M_{32}=0,\quad M_{33}=0,\quad M=\begin{bmatrix}0&1&0\\0&1&0\\1&0&0\end{bmatrix}\)The row for C records the link to A, so these rows form the connection matrix

Questions about this topic
Why is a connection matrix square?+
The same set of vertices labels the rows and the columns, so an n-vertex network has an n by n matrix
When is a leading-diagonal entry non-zero?+
It is non-zero when the network contains a loop at that vertex. Without a loop, the entry is zero
How does a one-way connection appear in the matrix?+
If A to B is present and there is no direct link from B to A, the A-to-B entry is non-zero and the B-to-A entry is zero. Count any separately stated return links in their own direction
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, General Mathematics, chapter 10: Matrices
