Read a step graph
A step graph has one horizontal segment for each input band, so the value stays constant within that band. At a boundary, the filled dot identifies the included value and the open dot identifies the excluded value
- Find the band Choose the interval that contains the input value \(\displaystyle 2\le h<5\)
- Read the horizontal height Every band has one constant charge across its interval \(\displaystyle 2\le h<5\Rightarrow C(h)=8\)
- Use the endpoint dots A filled dot includes an endpoint and an open dot excludes it \(\displaystyle h=b\Rightarrow\bullet\ \text{included},\quad\circ\ \text{excluded}\)
- Keep the values constant Do not interpolate between two horizontal step heights \(\displaystyle C(h)=c_1\quad\text{for }a\le h<b\)
Worked example
A storage locker charges in dollars according to the rule below, where h is the number of hours used. Find the charge for 6 hours
- \(\displaystyle h=6\Rightarrow h\ge6\)The input 6 belongs to the final band
- \(\displaystyle C(6)=13\)The horizontal height of the final band is 13 dollars
- \(\displaystyle C(6)=\$13\)The charge at exactly 6 hours is 13 dollars

Questions about this topic
What does a horizontal step mean?+
It means the output has one constant value for every input in that band
How is a boundary value read?+
Use the filled dot for the band that includes the endpoint and ignore the open dot that excludes it
Why should step heights not be averaged?+
A step graph changes between bands without taking intermediate values along a sloped segment
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 5: Linear functions and models
