Build a complete recurrence
Use the stated initial index and check a constant additive or multiplicative rule against the full display
- Initial value Read the value at index zero, not the index itself \(\displaystyle t_0=9\)
- Signed difference Subtract earlier from later. Keep a negative difference for a decrease \(\displaystyle d=5-9=-4\)
- Ratio Divide later by earlier when the earlier value is nonzero \(\displaystyle r=12/24=1/2\)
- Complete update Pair the initial condition with the forward rule
Worked example
Use a constant additive rule for the zero-indexed sequence 18, 13, 8, 3.
- \(\displaystyle t_0=18\)Read the initial value
- \(\displaystyle 13-18=-5\)Find the signed difference
- \(\displaystyle 8-13=-5\)Check the next transition
- \(\displaystyle 3-8=-5\)Check the final transition
- \(\displaystyle t_{n+1}=t_n-5\)State the forward update
- \(\displaystyle t_1=18-5=13\)Check the recurrence produces the next value

Questions about this topic
Can a subtraction be written as addition?+
Yes. Subtracting 5 is adding the signed difference −5. Keep the sign in a common-difference answer
Are multiplication by one half and division by 2 different rules?+
No. They give the same result at every step
Does selecting a recurrence prove I can write one independently?+
Not by itself. Practise writing both the initial condition and forward update on paper, then generate terms to check them
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, General Mathematics, chapter 3: Sequences and finance
