First principles
Use exact algebra on nonzero increments, then take the limit. A coefficient table records a symbolic polynomial in a printed basis
- Fix one input or keep it general To find f′(a), you may insert a before forming the quotient. To find a rule f′(x), keep x general. Both are valid uses of the same limit definition \(\displaystyle f\prime(a)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{f(a+h)-f(a)}{h}\)
- Replace the whole input Substitute x + h for every x and expand each power. Subtract the entire original rule with brackets
- Cancel for nonzero increments Every term in the difference numerator has an increment factor. Factor and cancel it only while the increment is nonzero \(\displaystyle \frac{hQ(x,h)}{h}=Q(x,h),\quad h\ne0\)
- Take the limit after simplifying For the resulting polynomial, let the increment approach zero. Terms containing a positive increment power vanish. The surviving expression is the derivative
- Notation changes the label, not the rate h, δ and Δx can denote the increment. Function-prime and Leibniz forms describe the same derivative \(\displaystyle y=f(x),\quad\frac{dy}{dx}=f\prime(x)\)
Worked example
Use first principles to find f′(−1) for f(x) = x² + 2x. Fix the input before forming the quotient
- \(\displaystyle f(-1)=-1\)Evaluate the original input
- \(\displaystyle f(-1+h)=(-1+h)^2+2(-1+h)=-1+h^2\)Replace every occurrence of the input, then expand
- \(\displaystyle \frac{f(-1+h)-f(-1)}{h}=\frac{h^2}{h}=h,\quad h\ne0\)Subtract the complete original value and cancel the nonzero increment
- \(\displaystyle f\prime(-1)=\lim_{h\to0}h=0\)A zero derivative is a valid exact result. The original function value was −1, not zero

Questions about this topic
Can I substitute a fixed input before expanding?+
Yes. For f′(a), use the difference quotient at the fixed input. Keeping the input general is necessary only when a general derivative rule is requested
Can the increment be negative?+
Yes. The derivative considers increments approaching zero from either side when the function domain permits them
Does a correct coefficient table prove a full written derivation?+
It checks the requested coefficients. A complete written proof also explains the operations and limit, so practice scores do not certify independent written method
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Mathematical Methods, chapter 12: Rates and derivatives
