Derive polynomial gradients from first principles

Question 1 of 8

Use the limit definition, rather than quoting the power rule

\[f(t)=t^{2}+t-1\]
\[f\prime(1)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h}\]
\[h\ne0\quad\text{while the quotient is simplified}\]

The input is fixed before forming the quotient. This is a valid way to find a derivative at one point

\[t=1\]
(a)2 marks

Form, expand and simplify the difference quotient for the fixed input. Fill its coefficients

\[\frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h}=A(h)+B,\quad h\ne0\]
(b)1 mark

Find the exact derivative at the stated input

\[t=1\]
