Constructing inverse relations and functions
An inverse relation is formed by swapping the coordinates of every point. It is an inverse function only when the original function is one-to-one on its stated domain, so a branch restriction may be needed
- Swap the coordinates To form an inverse relation, interchange the first and second coordinates of every point \(\displaystyle P=(a,b)\quad\Rightarrow\quad P^{-1}=(b,a)\)
- Exchange domain and range The domain of the inverse is the range of the original relation, and its range is the original domain \(\displaystyle D_{f^{-1}}=R_f,\quad R_{f^{-1}}=D_f\)
- Test for one-to-one behaviour An inverse is a function only when no two different inputs of the original function have the same output \(\displaystyle f(x_1)=f(x_2)\quad\Rightarrow\quad x_1=x_2\)
- Rearrange and select a branch Swap x and y, solve for y, and keep the branch or restriction that makes the inverse a function \(\displaystyle f(x)=2x+3\quad\Rightarrow\quad f^{-1}(x)=\frac{x-3}{2}\)
Worked example
For the one-to-one function shown, find its inverse rule, domain and range
- \(\displaystyle y=3x-4\)Write the function using y as the output coordinate
- \(\displaystyle x=3y-4\)Swap x and y to describe the inverse relation
- \(\displaystyle x+4=3y\quad\Rightarrow\quad y=\frac{x+4}{3}\)Rearrange the swapped equation to make y the subject
- \(\displaystyle f(-2)=3(-2)-4=-10,\quad f(4)=3(4)-4=8\)The original function is increasing, so its range is [-10,8]
- \(\displaystyle f^{-1}(x)=\frac{x+4}{3},\quad D_{f^{-1}}=[-10,8],\quad R_{f^{-1}}=[-2,4]\)The inverse domain is the original range, and the inverse range is the original domain

Questions about this topic
What is the difference between an inverse relation and an inverse function?+
Every relation can be reversed by swapping coordinates, but the reversed relation is a function only when each input has at most one output
Why must a function be one-to-one for its inverse to be a function?+
If two different original inputs share one output, swapping the coordinates gives one inverse input with two outputs
How is a branch selected for a quadratic inverse?+
Restrict the original quadratic to a one-sided domain, then choose the square-root sign that matches that branch
What is checked in the sketch tasks?+
The feature entries and choices are checked. The complete hand drawings and written explanations are ungraded
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Mathematical Methods, chapter 6: Functions and relations
