Midpoint and distance
Average positions for a midpoint. Apply Pythagoras to coordinate differences for a distance
- Keep pairs in order Horizontal coordinate first, vertical coordinate second. A fractional midpoint is a valid position
- Signed differences Subtract in a consistent order. The signs disappear on squaring; the final length is nonnegative
- Scale and rounding Convert coordinate units to physical units before final rounding. Use an exact value unless the question requests a decimal approximation
- Recover an endpoint Double the midpoint and subtract the known endpoint, coordinate by coordinate \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}x_B=2x_M-x_A\\y_B=2y_M-y_A\end{gathered}\)
Worked example
Find the midpoint and straight-line length between A=(−3,−2) and B=(3,2). Give the length to two decimal places
- \(\displaystyle \begin{gathered}x_M=\frac{-3+3}{2}=0\\y_M=\frac{-2+2}{2}=0\\M=(0,0)\end{gathered}\)Average corresponding positions
- \(\displaystyle \Delta x=3-(-3)=6\)Horizontal separation
- \(\displaystyle \Delta y=2-(-2)=4\)Vertical separation
- \(\displaystyle d^2=6^2+4^2=52\)Use Pythagoras
- \(\displaystyle d=\sqrt{52}\approx7.21\text{ units}\)Take the positive root, then round once

Questions about this topic
Can a midpoint have a fractional coordinate?+
Yes. A point halfway between two integer coordinates can have a half-integer coordinate
Does reversing the endpoints change the length?+
No. Reversing the endpoints changes the signs of both coordinate changes. Their squares stay the same
When should I round a length?+
Round only when the question requests a decimal approximation. Keep the exact squared length until taking the final square root
Can the distance be zero?+
Yes, if the endpoints coincide. The practice questions here use distinct endpoints, so their distances are positive
Can I measure the picture with a ruler?+
Use the labelled coordinates and numerical scales. Screen size and unequal visual axis scales can change how the picture looks
What does the answer form establish?+
A complete coordinate pair is one joint result. A numeric length or a selected exact expression does not independently demonstrate written Pythagoras, fraction arithmetic or a checking method
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Mathematical Methods, chapter 1: Linear relations and coordinate geometry
