Polynomial forms and higher-degree structure
Distribute every term, collect equal powers, identify common structure and verify every coefficient. Keep construction separate from recognition of a supplied answer
- Sum of cubes The first factor uses a sum. The quadratic has the opposite middle sign \(\displaystyle a^3+b^3=(a+b)(a^2-ab+b^2)\)
- Difference of cubes The first factor uses a difference. The quadratic has a positive middle product \(\displaystyle a^3-b^3=(a-b)(a^2+ab+b^2)\)
- Verify the cancellation Multiply both factors. The squared-linear and linear-squared cross terms cancel in pairs; only the two cubes remain
- Square the whole expression Each term multiplies every term. Include each pair of different terms twice \(\displaystyle (a+b+c)^2=a^2+b^2+c^2+2ab+2ac+2bc\)
- Collect equal powers The squared linear term and the constant times quadratic term both contribute to the coefficient of x²
- Reverse by checking every coefficient A plausible repeated factor is not enough. Its complete square must recover the original polynomial
- Common expression Treat the shared expression as one factor \(\displaystyle AB+AC=A(B+C)\)
- One input is not proof An identity must hold for every input. Expansion and coefficient comparison establish the equality; a single counterexample disproves it
Worked example
Expand the repeated quadratic and collect every power
- \(\displaystyle x^4+x^2+4\)First square each of the three terms; this is not the full result yet
- \(\displaystyle 2(x^2)(-x)=-2x^3\)Include the quadratic-linear cross-products
- \(\displaystyle 2(x^2)(2)=4x^2\)Include the quadratic-constant cross-products
- \(\displaystyle 2(-x)(2)=-4x\)Include the linear-constant cross-products
- \(\displaystyle x^4-2x^3+5x^2-4x+4\)The two contributions to x² are x² and 4x²

Questions about this topic
Does the coefficient table prove I found the factors independently?+
No. A complete answer option is supplied first
Can equivalent factors be reordered?+
Yes. This table nevertheless requests the exact order and signs of its supplied correct option. Its convention is not a claim that other equivalent products are wrong
Do two matching numerical values prove an identity?+
Not in general. Compare every coefficient or use an algebraic identity. One value where the expressions differ disproves equivalence
Must every equivalent product already be completely factorised?+
No. Continue factoring when the task requests complete factors in a specified number system. This mixed verification bank instead requests an equivalent product, then reads that supplied product in the specified order
Does a correct final answer show a written method or unassisted work?+
No. The automated response does not observe every algebraic step, use of hints or independent written proof
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 11, VCE Units 1 & 2, Mathematical Methods, chapter 2: Algebraic foundations
