Rational-power families
Reduce the rational exponent first, then use the reduced numerator and denominator to determine the domain and broad shape. Transformations map the parent features to the new endpoint or centre and key points
- Reduce the exponent Write p/q in lowest terms before using denominator parity or classifying the family \(\displaystyle \frac{8}{12}=\frac{2}{3}\)
- Use denominator parity for the domain An even denominator requires a non-negative radicand, while an odd denominator permits every real radicand \(\displaystyle q=4\Rightarrow u\ge0,\quad q=3\Rightarrow u\in\mathbb{R}\)
- Compare p and q for shape The reduced index p/q is above one for a polynomial-like shape and below one for a root-like shape \(\displaystyle p=5>q=2\Rightarrow\text{polynomial-like}\)
- Map parent features Use u = n(x − h) to map exact parent points, with the endpoint or centre at (h, k) \(\displaystyle u=1\Rightarrow\left(x,y\right)=\left(h+\frac{1}{n},k+a\right),\quad f(h)=k\)
Worked example
For the transformed rational-power rule below, state the domain, evaluate two points and classify the broad shape
- \(\displaystyle q=2\text{ is even},\quad x-1\ge0\Rightarrow x\ge1\)The even root requires a non-negative radicand, giving the stated domain
- \(\displaystyle f(1)=2\left(0\right)^{\frac{3}{2}}-4=-4\)At the endpoint x = 1, the parent input is zero and the function value is −4.
- \(\displaystyle f(5)=2\left(4\right)^{\frac{3}{2}}-4=2\left(8\right)-4=12\)The square root of 4 is 2, and cubing 2 gives 8
- \(\displaystyle p=3>q=2\Rightarrow\text{polynomial-like shape}\)The reduced index is greater than one, so the family has a polynomial-like shape

Questions about this topic
Why must p/q be reduced first?+
Equivalent fractions can have different apparent denominator parities, but the reduced exponent represents the rational-power family and determines its real domain and shape
How does the denominator determine the real domain?+
An even reduced denominator represents an even root, so the radicand must be non-negative. An odd reduced denominator allows negative radicands as well
How does a transformation change the parent features?+
The horizontal change uses u = n(x − h), the vertical coefficient uses a, and the vertical shift uses k, so the parent endpoint or centre maps to (h, k)
Does a correct feature entry mean my complete sketch has been marked?+
No. Drawings and written explanations are ungraded
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Mathematical Methods, chapter 2: Functions and graphs
