Bernoulli trials and moments
A Bernoulli variable is a specified binary indicator, recording 1 on its success event and 0 otherwise. Distinguish that variable from raw outcome labels and from a sequence of trials
- Name the recorded variable A specified 0/1 indicator is Bernoulli. Its raw experiment may have several outcomes that the coding combines \(\displaystyle X=1\text{ on }A,\quad X=0\text{ on }A^{\prime}\)
- Define the event coding The event coded 1 determines the success parameter. Outcome probabilities alone do not choose the event label \(\displaystyle p=\Pr(A)\)
- Use the complement The failure probability is one minus the success probability \(\displaystyle p=\frac{3}{5},\quad 1-p=\frac{2}{5}\)
- Use the moment rules For a Bernoulli variable, the mean is p, the variance is p(1-p), and the standard deviation is the principal square root \(\displaystyle \operatorname{E}(X)=p,\quad \operatorname{Var}(X)=p(1-p),\quad \operatorname{SD}(X)=\sqrt{p(1-p)}\)
Worked example
A Bernoulli variable X is 1 for success and 0 for failure. The success probability is 4/7. Find its mean, variance and standard deviation
- \(\displaystyle p=\frac{4}{7},\quad q=1-p=1-\frac{4}{7}=\frac{3}{7}\)Find the failure probability by taking the complement of the success probability
- \(\displaystyle \operatorname{E}(X)=p=\frac{4}{7}\)The mean of a Bernoulli variable equals its success probability
- \(\displaystyle \operatorname{Var}(X)=p(1-p)=\frac{4}{7}\times\frac{3}{7}=\frac{12}{49}\)Multiply the success probability by the failure probability
- \(\displaystyle \operatorname{SD}(X)=\sqrt{\operatorname{Var}(X)}=\sqrt{\frac{12}{49}}=\frac{2\sqrt{3}}{7}\)The standard deviation is the principal square root of the variance

Questions about this topic
Can an experiment with three raw outcomes define a Bernoulli variable?+
Yes. Specify an event A, record 1 when A occurs and 0 otherwise. That indicator is Bernoulli even if several raw outcomes belong to A or its complement. A different variable that records three distinct values is not the same indicator
If both raw outcomes have probability one half, is the coding determined?+
No. Either named outcome could be coded 1. Both choices give parameter one half, so the parameter is known even though the event-label coding is missing
Must a single Bernoulli variable belong to independent identical trials?+
No. Those are additional requirements for a common-probability repeated-trial model. Two indicators can each be Bernoulli but have different success probabilities
Why is the mean of a Bernoulli variable p?+
The variable is 1 for success and 0 for failure, so E(X) = 1 × p + 0 × (1-p) = p.
How are variance and standard deviation related?+
Variance is p(1-p), and standard deviation is the principal square root of that variance
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator

Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Mathematical Methods, chapter 11: Binomial distribution
