Properties of a discrete probability distribution
A discrete probability distribution is valid only when every probability is between 0 and 1 inclusive and all probabilities add to 1. A mass-function rule is used only on its stated discrete value set
- Use the stated value set Evaluate a mass function only at the listed discrete values \(\displaystyle x\in\{-1,0,2\}\)
- Check every probability Each probability must be at least 0 and at most 1. \(\displaystyle 0\leq\frac{3}{8}\leq1\)
- Check the total Add all probabilities for the complete value set \(\displaystyle \frac{1}{8}+\frac{1}{4}+\frac{5}{8}=1\)
- Complete a missing entry Subtract the known total from 1 to find one missing probability \(\displaystyle p_3=1-\left(\frac{1}{4}+\frac{3}{8}\right)=\frac{3}{8}\)
Worked example
For the value set and mass function shown, evaluate the probability at three and decide whether the rule gives a valid distribution
- \(\displaystyle p(3)=\frac{3+3}{12}=\frac{6}{12}=\frac{1}{2}\)Substitute the requested value from the stated discrete set
- \(\displaystyle p(-2)=\frac{1}{12},\quad p(0)=\frac{3}{12}=\frac{1}{4},\quad p(3)=\frac{6}{12}=\frac{1}{2}\)Evaluate the rule at every listed value
- \(\displaystyle \sum_xp(x)=\frac{1}{12}+\frac{3}{12}+\frac{6}{12}=\frac{10}{12}=\frac{5}{6}\)Add the probabilities over the complete value set
- \(\displaystyle \frac{5}{6}\neq1\)The total is not 1, so this rule does not give a valid probability distribution

Questions about this topic
What makes a discrete probability distribution valid?+
Every probability must be between 0 and 1 inclusive, and the probabilities for all listed values must add exactly to 1.
Why is the domain of a mass function important?+
The rule assigns probabilities only to the stated discrete values, so values outside that set are not part of the distribution
How is a missing probability found?+
Add the known probabilities and subtract their exact total from 1.
Can I use a calculator?+
No. This topic is practised without a calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Mathematical Methods, chapter 10: Discrete random variables
