Variance and standard deviation
Variance measures the spread of a discrete random variable in squared units. Standard deviation is the principal square root of variance, so it has the same units as the variable
- Square before weighting Square each value before multiplying it by its probability \(\displaystyle (-3)^2\times\frac{1}{4}=\frac{9}{4}\)
- Find the two moments Calculate E(X^2) and E(X) as separate probability-weighted sums \(\displaystyle \operatorname{E}(X^2)=(-2)^2\left(\frac{1}{4}\right)+4^2\left(\frac{1}{4}\right)=5\)
- Subtract the squared mean Subtract the square of E(X) from E(X^2) \(\displaystyle \operatorname{Var}(X)=5-\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^2=\frac{19}{4}\)
- Take the principal root Use the non-negative square root of the variance for standard deviation \(\displaystyle \operatorname{SD}(X)=\sqrt{\frac{19}{4}}=\frac{\sqrt{19}}{2}\)
Worked example
A discrete random variable has the distribution shown below. Find its variance and standard deviation
- \(\displaystyle \operatorname{E}(X) = (-1)\left(\frac{1}{4}\right)+2\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)+5\left(\frac{1}{4}\right)=2\)Find the probability-weighted mean
- \(\displaystyle \operatorname{E}(X^2)=(-1)^2\left(\frac{1}{4}\right)+2^2\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)+5^2\left(\frac{1}{4}\right)=\frac{17}{2}\)Square each value before multiplying by its probability
- \(\displaystyle \operatorname{Var}(X)=\frac{17}{2}-2^2=\frac{9}{2}\)Subtract the squared mean from the expected square
- \(\displaystyle \operatorname{SD}(X)=\sqrt{\frac{9}{2}}=\frac{3\sqrt{2}}{2}\)Take the principal square root of the variance

Questions about this topic
What is the difference between variance and standard deviation?+
Variance measures spread in squared units, while standard deviation is its principal square root and uses the original units
Why are the values squared before they are weighted?+
E(X^2) is defined by squaring each value first and then multiplying by its probability
Does adding a constant change the variance?+
No. Adding a constant does not change variance. Multiplying the variable by a factor scales variance by the square of that factor, so its sign has no effect
Can I use a calculator?+
A calculator is allowed unless a question is marked no calculator
Which year level and chapter is this?+
Year 12, VCE Units 3 & 4, Mathematical Methods, chapter 10: Discrete random variables
